dec5.jpg dec2.jpg dec3.jpg dec4.jpg Time for an update. The main "nerve central" board took up countless hours but is now completed. All that remains now is a bundle of looms that will go into the cab for conection to switches and guages etc. Finally settled on a name for it, aptly called "The Beast". After some consideration decided to fit the trans and tailshaft before the cab went back on which will primarily leave fitment of the engine once its overhauled. Needed the trans in to know where the dump pipe roughly sat so I could fabricate the custom 3" full flow split exhaust system. It came up a treat and just need a short section to make once the dump pipe is in its 100% correct position on the engine. At least 90% of the exhaust is done, will remove it this weekend, finish the welds, mounts and clean it up before giving it a full exhaust tape wrap.

The main locker is 99% done with all relevant covers, shelves and tool boxes mounted, fitted some excellent led strip lights for locker lights, complete with radio remote and dimming feature. Fitted the remain diff/gearbox breathers plus some really cool IR activated courtesy leds at the front and rear, make for easy access at night time. Sound system is complete with speakers hidden at rear and in main locker with swtchbox to enable switching of speaker groups. Also fitted a LED counter display to show how much water is left in the underfloor tanks plus an outlet and swing away tap at the rear. All down hill from here which is a relief! All going well, hoping to lower cab on this weekend, cheers!

Easy way to do the gearbox and transfer case breathers!

Top effort on the gearbox painting too. I’ve always wanted to do a gearbox and engine paint job on my Subaru but can’t be stuffed getting in all those books and crannies to clean and prep properly! Kudos to you!

Engine getting the same treatment in blue too?

Looking good and you’ve come a very long way towards completing the project, keep it up and thanks for the update!

            Cheers

thanks Bennie, it makes a world of difference painting the trans, thou I had the advantage of having it out of the vehicle and easy to clean and paint. Overall its been great doing the project as a ground up resto as everything is exposed and accessible plus you feel a bit guilty if you dont paint everything whilst your there. Indeed the engine will get the same treatment, its actually a nice blue, the old ford light blue.

Of course now Ive gone this far, all those engine bay brackets etc etc will get new paint as well. Finished the split exhaust today and went thru the joyous experience of wrapping the whole lot in exhaust tape...but %$#@& does that tape make you itchy lol. (glass fibres) and as they say in the movies, its a wrap. cheers

well it finally happened, some inconsiderate locals decided to bring covid into town and put us into lockdown. there goes a perfectly good weekend with no progress on the beast. posting few pics from last weekend showing how awesome it looks with the cab dropped on. absolutely stoked with the height its sitting at which is not bad considering it being a 40mm plus lift. naturally it will drop a little with the engine in place but not much as I also fitted the bullbar with no adverse effect. there will be wheel flares fitted front and rear plus custom running boards, snorkle etc. more to come soon dec18a.jpg dec18c.jpg dec18b.jpg

                  Nice! Looks tidy!

Sucks about Covid being in town. It’s near us and was here some time ago. Bit different in a smaller community though. Wear your mask everywhere, sanitise hands before entering and when leaving places you visit and minimise time with others where possible.

They’re the simple things you can do. Hiding in your shed working on projects is highly effective too

                  Cheers

Cheers Bennie, my thoughts exactly, hide and you wont be seeked lol.

Restrictions aside, managed to get a bit more done. Remounted the bullbar, realigned it and secured in position with some extra bracing to the mounts. theres a little annoying gap on the wings so have ordered some rubber extrusion to fix that. Will fabricate suitable sump guard in due course taking advantage of the excellent approach angle gained by the lift kit. Fitted the wheel flare rubber and at 28mm projection it looks the part and gives legal cover to the tyres. Will use the same on the rear guards. Gave the safari snorkle a lick of paint and fitted it to the vehicle and looks a treat. Added a couple of small thermofans to the air con condensor to assist airflow thru the grill and subsequently the new radiator. Have a beautiful chrome grille to replace the old black one which really makes them look slick, plus have new chrome wing mirrors and chrome door handles to continue that line of bling. Finished the application of hi vis tape to cab and bar with some added red accent pinstriping which makes it standout awesome plus new courier badging and XLT badging as its now upgraded from the original GL model.

So chipping away and making good progress. Look at the cab interior next, wiring, switches, guages, all that stuff to give life to the vehicle. will include overhead console and other mods. Whilst this is underway, will send the engine down south and get a full short motor rebuild done after which i will finish assembling the engine on site.

Will keep the updates coming in as things happen, trust everyone on the forum has a wonderful and safe new yearcheers alan hny3.jpg hny1.jpg hny2.jpg

jan1.jpg Got few more boxes ticked off. All the front end wiring is done with appropiate looms directed to cab for final connection to switches, guages etc. Once again, I used those awesome terminal blocks which makes for 100% joining of circuits and easy fault finding. Installed an independant relay/fuse box which covers lights etc on bullbar. To minimise bulky bunches of battery leads on the primary battery I like to fit a seperate large terminal block which is tidy and keeps those extra cables from aux and rear batteries safely out of sight, in this case in behind the wiper bottle. Fitted the new tray for the aux battery plus the awesome chrome mirrors and spent most last weekend nutting out and fabricating the overhead console. Again I went down the same path in the past and used that nice 25mm aluminium box with those plastic connectors. Took some effort working out suitable anchor brackets for the console frame but happy with end result, lots tricky angles. these frames are ideal for consoles and naturally its just a skeletal frame, the console will come into fruitition with aluminium panels covered in suitable trim. Theres a bunch of guages and switches to go up there plus the stereo and UHF and some other goodies...more to come. cheers jan5.jpg jan6.jpg jan3.jpg jan2.jpg jan4.jpg
