  • Gen 2 (NK) Hazard Switch

    Hi folks,

    Symptoms:

    1) indicators work, Hazard lights do not.
    2) Hazard button pressed while indicator on stops indicators.
    3) trailer 7Pin Plug tests out ok, all functions tested for correct output.
    4) when trailer is hitched and connected, Turning signal activated blows fuse after fuse after fuse.

So with this I am thinking it might be the Haz switch (unless otherwise told)

Ive removed the switch and tested between each pin.

    See picture:

Can anyone who has a Gen2 and working electrics confirm their switch electrically is the same as pictured?

Sounds like two separate problems, a faulty hazard light switch shouldn't cause problems weather trailer is connected or not. I'd say you have a short in the trailer an a faulty hazard light switch.

Although strange things do happen I would replace hazard light switch before delving too far into the trailer

        Thanks for your input Johnno.

I dont believe its a trailer issue as the trailer causes no issues when connected to my other 2 vehicles.

I have a new relay that i will fit tomorrow and will update this feed from there.

I have replaced the relay with a Narva type supplied by my local AutoPro.

With the new installed I still have the same symptoms:
          -Indicator works
          -Hazards dont
-Indicate when trailer connected blows Fuse.

Next I guess is to replace the Hazard switch. Ebay only reveals ones from Euro/ UK. Anyone know where in Aus I can get one.. preferably NEW?

I have replaced the Flasher Relay- no change.
I have replaced the Hazard Switch- no change.
Found 15A fuse in box near battery blown, replaced it. Hazards and indicators now work. But blow as soon as i connect the trailer. Have checked trailer (all connections, light sockets, resistance checked everything no problems).

Is it any indicator blowing fuse with trailer on or just left or right?

Sounds like either trailer is wired as five pin and vehicle as 7 or vise versa as 5 and 7 pin configuration use different numbered terminals for indicator connection
This could also explain why trailer is ok on other vehicles as their wiring probably marries up with trailer wheras this vehicle doesn't ?

That's what I'm thinking or that one of the connections is bridged so it works on either plug until you introduce something that has accessory wiring and then everything goes haywire

Guys the suggestions were taken on board and very much appreciated.

I got stuck into it today - heres what went down ...

removed those stupid crimp clips that the tow bar installers would have used to run in the trailer socket wiring. While doin this found that they had shorted some cables (green to blue, and Yellow to black). As Blue and black cores usually arent used I cut them. Instantly this solved the issue- EVERYTHING worked.

So, at this point I was a tad disappointed as I was expecting more.

At this point i followed their wiring more. The 7core cable was mostly tied in to the factory wiring behind the RHS bumper lights, then a single core run inside the pipe that runs across the rear between the chassis. At both ends the pipe was burred and has rubbed in to the single wire.

From there I cut it all out and replaced it. Soldered all joints, Even ran in the reverse light while in there.

So now i know Paj now suits the trailer that Ive had for years. 7-pin large round configuration.

I also added some extra Reverse lights under the rear bumper.

Next on the list I will upgrade the trailer lights to Combination Turn, stop/tail, reverse.

Looking good i think- now am starting to get inspired!
