  • Max boat motor size

I have a 1977 tinnie 11ft. It has a compliance plate that says up to 7hp. But a modern 9.8hp short shaft (e.g Tohatsu) is lighter than an old school 7hp from the 70’s. Does anyone know grounds for re-stamping? But I appreciate max capacity is probably not just about transem strength and weight of motor?

Just pull the old number off the cowling and replace it with a lower number....ie..take off 10 and put 7 on it. Boats now have weights for motor compliance..not h.p. I,ve had a few tinnies with bigger than legal motors but never had an issue.
