    02 NP Pajero Petrol....Hi there I suffered an oil leak from what I though was a diff seal while I was driving on a beach at Sraddy, took it to my local dealership, and they told me it was a companion shaft issue (I pesume a new name for a 1/2 shaft) and charged a several hundred dollars. I now find its a know problem, and now I have wine in the diff after only 9 days after the work was done. took it back and told them and after some humming they said oh we need to reple the diff $$$$$$ so I said well it never whined B4 and apparently the companion shaft issue is a known problem and Mitsi fix them no-cost well some times they said but you are out of warranty (96K and 4 yrs old) but I looked on the invoice for the shaft and mitsi paid 75%. so I asked them why would thery not do the diff now as it was not a problem before the know issue came up. and was told I was lucky to have the shaft replaced adn they would not cover the diff.....Anyone else suffered a 1/2 shaft problem and a noisy whinning diff and what outcome...

    There is a thread in the NM / NP section. The companion shaft problem is fairly well known. Some people have had them swapped for free, others (like me) were charged before they realised that there was a Mits service bulletin about these (not a recall). Yours and the one in the thread are the first ones I have heard of where diff failure has been the result.

    I am not sure where you would stand on this as it is not a recall issue but on the other hand they had more or less admitted some liability by paying for the shafts. If worse comes to worse and you dont feel like an extended argument (been there, done that, gave up) I would be taking it to a driveline specialist and having the diff rebuilt rather than replaced. Or even fit one out of a wreck. I doubt it would have drained all of its oil, but it may have been enough to starve the bearings and cause the whine. The diffs come out of the subframe without too much trouble.

      Thanks for that, I was surprised that they said it had to be a replacement I would have thought an overhaul would have been the go. but I guess a replacement is more money and easier....anyway I am still waiting for Mitsi's response to my calim that the diff has obviously failed due to the initial failure of a known weak point. not going to hold my breath tho and yes I know all about protraced arguments with Mitsi

        Companion shaft good news

        I was surprised but after some arguments with Mits Warranty people, and I pointed out they had already admited liability by agreeing to pay 75% of the companion shaft failure. They finally agreed to replace the entire dif at only 25% cost to me still a but peeved as it was a Mitsi mech design fault in the beginning. But the old diff was quite a mess a lot of metalic bits in oil and it was soo nosiy towards the end took 1.5 hrs to do the job, and I can hear the kids whinning now instead of the diff. All in all a not bad outcome but still miffed it cost be the best part of $900 for both the companion shafte replacement and then the dif (Complete with 2 new upgraded companion shafts and circlips
