  • Looking for help from power steering guys

    Hi All
    Ive had a problem with my cruiser now with the power steering not returning to centre and would like to hear from some one that works in the trade please, up here advise cost money so any help would be great

    used to be nl 1999 auto,3.5lt petrol.
    now 1994 80 series cruiser diesel wagon
    bull bar side steps, mags,dual batt system,2 waecos 35lt,40lt h/reese towbar,103amp agm batt, 500w inverter. narva spotties, uniden uh7700nb uhf 40 ch narrow band, 2.5kva inverter generator

    does the power steering normally return to center ?

      yeah, when you turn a corner and let go of the wheel it turns back towards centre position , mine stays in the position it was to turn the corner and I have to manual turn the wheel back

        Peter, how about you raise the front off ground and start the engine then turn the sterring full left and hold for 10 secounds, then do the same for the right hand lock. now reove the power steering fuild lid and have a helper watch for any bubbles etc when you do this test again. next test whilst car is raised is to do the same left and right full lock then manualy turn the steering wheel back by hand slowly taking note of any resistance from both directions [ left then right ] when the steering is centered take hands off the steering wheel with engine still in idle and take note if the steering wheel wants to slightly turn left or right abit. you problem could be as simple as an air lock in the system or a faulty pump, i would say if its fitted with a rack this should be ok but if fitted with a power steering box there could be gear issues inside the steering box. you can also try a drive test with the power steering belt off just to confirm if its the pump at fault.

          thanks so far for the help,
          I have done what you have said and ive fitted a new remanufactured steering box
          ive been chasing this for 12mths and slowly been told to replace everything so the only thing left was the pump
          I bleed the system when the new box was fitted, even took the return line off and used a bottle to make sure there was no air
          with the wheels in the air on full lock engine running it wont turn back

              Hows the steering Dampener? Could that be stuffed and holding it from turing back??

                hi Andrew, every thing on the front of the cruiser has been changed except the power steering pump and wheel alignment is set to zero

                  grab another pump Peter and all should be fine .

                    ive ordered a new pump, that was costly
                    what causes low pressure on the steering
                    that's what I was told the problem is

                      where can I get hold of a gauge to check the power steering pressure from, it has to go to 1,200 psi

                        you need a hydraulic specialist to test this pressure. Peter its the Pump.

                          ok no worries, im hoping it is
                          its just that ive heard ITS JUST THIS, for the last 12mths and ended up costing me 2,100 bucks
                          so im hoping that fixes is , I think im just got to the point where im boubting every one now

                            Hi Peter, you say the steering is set to '0'. You should have a small amount of toe in or toe out, cant remember which, think its toe in. If there is no toe in then it will cause problems. Bob
                            98 NL GLS 3500. Now with a Bocar bullbar and 265/75/16 tyres. Waiting for a snorkel and UHF.
                            Now with 7" HID


                            Forget the health food, I need all the preservatives I can get. Alcohol is a preservative isnt it?

                              yeah, I know. its suppose to be 0.08mm but after getting told its wheel alignment all the time I set it to zero, the old 45s were zero
                              once ive got the steering to work properly ill get it set again to what it should be
