As far as im aware, all Australian spec 4M40s (2.8ITDs) were the old mechanical injection type, so there are no electronics to tickle up like with the 4M41 (3.2 DID) so no hope to 'chip' them.
An alternative (given the lack of electronics) would be to talk to an diesel specialist re a small lift in boost, maybe a free flowing exhust / dump pipe and an adjustment of the injection pump.
