  • Fraser Dec 13

So last week we headed over to Fraser for a five day holiday.

Left early AM from Brissy, stopped in at Rainbow Beach for a few things we forgot, topped up the fuel tank (used 20L for the 260km trip from home) and headed to Inskip. Everyone told us Inskip was soft, and we passed a couple of guys bogged to the floorpan just as we hit the soft stuff, but no dramas for the Paj.

The lineup for the sole Manta Ray barge (the other one is up at Gladstone doing work with the CSG plants). We all fitted on. It was a couple of tour groups mostly, using 80 series with 8 people in them.

On the island, around Hook pt and up the beach:

We stayed at some beach houses at Eurong. Rest of the day was chilling out there - down the beach in the arvo with the kids at the freshwater stream just out the front, swim in the pool etc.

    Dad found a little crab:

    Someone was happy:

    Back home:

Second day was raining on and off. We elected to do the run up the beach for some sightseeing - Eli Ck, Maheno, Pinnacles, Indian head etc. Didn't get out of the car much due to the rain, but here's the Paj at the Maheno.

After that back to the beach house for a late lunch, then swimming in the pool and more beach play.

Third day was better so we hit the beach early and shot up to Eli Ck. Stayed there for several hours, spending time with the kids. Watched a tour bus get bogged ...

Got RBT'd by the coppers (who liked my Maxtrax mount) out the front of Eli. My son thought they were the coolest policeman ever being able to work on the beach. We originally started up the top near the boardwalk but later moved further down the creek.

Went down Eli a few times ...

A few planes on the beach:

After several hours we did a quick revisit to the Maheno in sun:

Grabbed a late lunch at the bakery and headed back to the house for lunch:

After that we headed to Lake McKenzie for a few hour dip until everyone had left ... had the place to ourselves.

The drive back was a little slow, got back in the early evening. Had to stop a few times to remove bits of cars ripped off on the track (mostly bumper corners and underbody plates).

Day four was a quieter day. Spent the morning damming a small stream out the front of our beach house. (Tyre track were before we arrived, we were well out of the way of traffic)

The only time the little recovery shovel got used:

Chillin in our little lake (note the dam wall just burst!)

Lunch and then in the arvo we drove to Stonetool sandblow and Lake Wabby.

Removing some stuff from in front of the car on the track (was narrow in places)

One of many dingos we spotted (was watching fisherman):

Day five was packup day and head home. Drove around Hook Pt about 2hrs after low tide, was quite soft in places so it took a while and a bit of lugging.

Poser shot on Hook Pt with Rainbow beach in the background (used my 400mm lens to compress the photo):

Couple of French guys on bikes pulled up on a big lap of the world I suppose, they were happy to find someone to take a photo of both of them on their bikes 8)

    Only ones on the barge:

    Drove down Rainbow Beach:

After a run down and back along Rainbow Beach we dropped into town, aired up and hit the bitumen for the haul home.

Another "best ever" holiday in the opinion of the 6yo, so that's all that matters 8)

No probs with the Paj, all 4H with CDL and 20psi in the tyres. Beaches were mostly easy (cept for the soft stuff run down Hook Pt), inland tracks were soft/rough in places but nothing of concern.

Took 90% of the photo on my Sony RX100 point and shoot, the rest were mostly the weatherproof Panasonic FT5. Used the big DSLR for the dingo photo and the hook point photo ...

Nice pics! It is a beautiful spot. I love Fraser and Moreton. I think Fraser has the most to see though.

Gee the Maheno has rotten away since we were last there a few years ago. Suppose salt isn't the best thing for an old ship!

Did you camp on the beach or stay at Catherdral Campsite? We stayed at Catherdral last time we were there. Have also stayed at Kingfisher and up near Waddy (on the beach).

Have been to Fraser 6 times over the last 20 years and never get sick of it - always something new to see. Even drove over Nagala Rocks once in an NG Pajero. Pretty scary- the tide was coming in! Got instructions from some German tourists to get the line! Wouldn't do it in the NT!

Lke McKenzie is delightful when the tourist buses aren't there! The colour of that blue water in the midday sun! Cold though to swim.

Glad you enjoyed your trip. We hope to be up there camping next June or July (put of school hols).

    Cheers,
    Sally

      Hi Sally,

We stayed at www.fraserislandbeachhouses.com.au Decided against camping due to potential rainy weather and a little 18mth old and potential dingo risk (can't watch him all the time, and its not a great holiday if you can't turn off for a little bit). We do plan to return and camp once he's a little older.
