    Instant ignition failure?

    My totally reliable '91 Pajero (V6 3.0l) started playing up two days ago.
    Symptoms are turn the key and *nothing* happens. No noise, no trying to turn over....nothing. Try 30 seconds later and its fine - starts first time......drive along the road and engine stops - no warning. Turn key and engine restarts.

    Trying to eliminate the obvious:

    a) Engine turns over fine when it works at all so probably not a flat battery?
    b) Probably not ignition coil or black box as engine would turn over even if it didnt start?
    c) As engine 'stops' without warning when running, probably not starter moter or solenoid?
    d) Probably not alternator as that wouldnt affect ability to turn over?
    e) Probably not main battery terminal connections as a car will run without a battery once it is started?

    any faults in this logic?

    Suggestions:
    a) Faulty ignition switch/wiring?
    b any thing else?

    I am trying to narrow down the options before I start fiddling. Of course every time I am geared up to check it out....nothing goes wrong Has anyone seen anything similar before. First started happening on a day that was 35+ (ie probably 50+ celcius inside the car when parked - but I dont know if that's just concidence).

    Will be a crook ECU. Can get a reconditioned one for around $600 or, if you know how, replace the electrolytic capacitors on yours.

      Im not so confident - unless it has an immobiliser (which i dont think it does).... the starter circuit doesnt go through the computer should it?? Power straight from the igntion switch to the starter solinoid.

        The symptom described is excactly how my NH behaved when it's ECU failed. Completely dead. Wouldn't crank, nothing.

          My NH had the ECU die in about 1998. It would crank, there was just no spark (Or anything much else).

            The motor will crank over even if the ECU is unplugged and removed.

            Can any fault codes be extracted?

            The vehicle won't have a factory alarm or immobiliser, but does it have an aftermarket alarm? If so, I'd be cutting it out of the system for starters.
