GEN 1 auto/manual diffs

Can anybody please help me out. I have a 1990 NG LWB manual 2.5 litre diesel and it needs a new diff. I can get my hands on a front and rear diff out of a 1989 NF pajero with a 2.6 litre petrol auto. I was wondering if the ratio's would be different being out of an automatic. The mounting points and tail shaft lengths measure up the same. Any help would be appreciated.

You need to check the firewall plate for the diff ratios.
I expect that you can check your not sure about the donner vehicles diffs.


in this case the diff ratios are 5.285
yours should be 4.875 (from memory)

If you cannot check out the doner vehicle firewall plate, check out the FAQ section for the common ratios for the 2.6 engine (in this site).

When i got a new diff for my NG diesel, i had to get another NG diesel diff because of the ratios..

So there are 2 diffs ratios for both but they are the same so a 50/50 chance.
Check the firewall plate if you can to confirm.

2.6 / 2.5TD = 4.625, 4.875

3.0 V6 = 4.625, 4.875
t/case = 1.944:1 low range for 2.6, 2.3TD & 2.5TD, 1.925:1 for 3.0 V6

Gen 1

2.6, 2.3TD, 2.5TD & 2.5TDI (some) :-
front axle = 25 spline, 29mm diameter, diff = 7.25" diameter (low pinion)
rear axle = 28 spline, 30.5mm diameter, diff = 8" diameter
3.0V6 :-
front axle = 28 spline, 29mm diameter, diff = 8" diameter (low pinion)
rear axle = 28 spline, 30.5mm diameter, diff = 9" diameter

Thanks guys for the replies I am on a mission to find out the ratios at the moment. Will let you know what I find.

if your unsure what the diff came out most of these diffs had a sticker on them stating the ratio's eg my old ng man v6 had 4.625 on a sticker on the crown wheel bulge near the oil filler hole
