  • Price opinion needed.

Howdy all, I am looking seriously at a 6/94 GLS Pajero. 178000 k's just come out of the workshop with a rebuilt 2.8td, doesn't seem to have had a day in it's life offroad. Trading in old faithfull NB Pajero on it, now they have $14990 on it with a $13000 changeover price.......to me it's a little over priced but it seems to be in great condition. What do ye say on the price? Am I looking at paying too much?

Looking at some sites I see same models and younger for less but with lots more k's on them. To me a reconditioned motor is worth paying for but is it worth paying that much? The car is virtually spotless, (and I really really want it ) tell me what I should do.

    Cheers.

we can't tell you what to do, but rather make suggestions and observations. the ultimate choice is up to you (and i suppose your bank )!

The reco'd motor is probably driving up the price noticeably. The thing you'd need to find out is what exactly have they done and whether their reputation is is good or poor for this work.
Do they have a garuntee/warranty for a certain time/mileage for the reco?

Obviously you'd have to take it for a test drive and get your mechanic to check it out.

Petrol prices are playing a big part in Fourbie prices. I got mine when it was $1.35+/litre and still going up. 6 months later petrol has come down a little and ive noticed hte fourbie prices go up. Think i would be paying about another 2 grand on my car if i got it now!

If your keen, get it thoroughly checked out. This may uncover something not too major which can be used to haggle. Haggle anyway!

Thanks for the input, it's a diesel too btw and has a 12 month warranty on the reco. The car is really clean which makes the decision that much harder, I would honestly rather pay more to start with than pay less and still have to do a motor or something else expensive. I think it comes with one of those yard warranties that lasts 12 or 36 months too.

I'm going back today to have another look over it to see if I can find anything to use as leverage on him but I'm not hopefull on that score. I guess it all depends on what the bank manager says, they may not give enough to buy this one but there is one or two others around the ten grand mark I will investigate.

If only the diesels were as common as the petrols I would be right.

        Cheers

Well the bank will give us the money but not on a 94 model. Now have to find someone to lend money who ain't squeamish on year model.

I would be a bit worried why a diesel needed a new engine at 178k.
Most diesels would just be run in then.
Whats the rest of the drive chain like?

bought mine in march 200K on clock. paid 9.5 and it came fully loaded and was owned by an old retired guy. I asked him how the 4x4 system worked and he didnt know. It never went off road. I would not pay over 10 k for one. saw one in feb that had 126k and he wanted 10k wanted it but I was low on funds at the time. bank will only lend max 9.7 on this car, thats what they told me.good luck what the worst that can happen?

The car is pretty sweet overall with everything seeming to work as intended. As far as why it needed another motor I ain't got a clue, but since I have to either get another lender on board or look for a post 2000 model I'll be giving it a miss.

I have done some more checking around and there's some later models with a few more k's on them for not much more, so may end up good. Don't want to pay good money just to have to go down the "how much for a recoe motor mate."

                Cheers

Geez, I've not got good news for you but I feel like I got an ok deal on my 94NJ GLS now. I paid just over 5k for mine, done over 300k but the motor was in perfect running order, head just been done and the suspenion and auto trans also. Got rego, a service and 12 months warranty kicked in as well. isn't 15k a little over-the-top for a car of it's age ?

You will have a hard time getting a bank to lend you unsecured loan on a car that costs more than you can insure it for. To be honest I'm not always a fan of low K cars. I've had more problems with them than the high K's, it's all about how it's serviced/looked after I think and alot of stuff still wears just with age even if it's not had alot of use.

You've just about hit the nail on the head here Sinbad.
A new motor at these K's would instantly make me suspicious.
It's a bit hard to truly believe that a 2.8TD was never used offroad.
If you're still thinking about it have another look and another....
These are a hard model to find but I would recommend waiting just a little bit longer.
I jagged mine after a long search (was starting to think about Patrols & Cruisers) but fate came through in the end.
                    Just my 2c

Yeah done that as well, but I'm about as much a toyota man as I am a holden man so that won't happen. Patrol on the other hand may get a look.

Ended up with an 94 GLX td from another dealer. Had a in chassis rebuild two months ago.

                        Picking it up today.

Still wanted the GLS but everyone said too dear.

You'll probably find a better range of aftermarket gear for the the GLX if the bug hits hard enough.

Post a few pics when you get a chance

I will. At the moment I'm as happy as a pig in poop.

                              Congrats on the new purchase.

But... "This thread is worthless without pics!"

I've got a GLX and the only thing I would like that it doesn't have is the leccy windows. Everything else is of not much use or cosmetic.
-Power mirrors: The standard mirrors are large enough that I haven't had to move them in over 4 years.
-Flares: More to damage. And my 31 x 10.5's just fit under the guards... well the tread does anyway
-Alloy wheels: Bought some GLS wheels and tyres for $650.00.
-Cruise: Used to work at an autObarn. Had it fitted aftermarket.
-Plush interior and Captain's chairs: PPFFFTT... give me a break! I've got two young kids who trash nice interiors. You should see my wife's RX Liberty!
