  • NM manual gearbox, anyone have a spare?

My wife said the Pajero jumped out of 5th gear on the way home today, I thought maybe a lazy gear change and it was'nt put in 5th properly.WRONG She later drove out the driveway and the gearbox dumped it's oil on the driveway and road with some gear casing.
So, does anyone know where there is a second hand 5 speed manual gearbox for an NM?(preferably in Perth)
Also, are the NM and NP boxes the same? and, I know this will be scary, how much is a new one?
    Thanks,
    Sandgroper.

Good luck - took me quite a while to find one. try www.findapart.com. Goes out a huge number of wreckers. Be specific - ie petrol or diesel, and get the whole assembly (transmission and transfer). AFAIK the NM / NP are the same.

The very early ones were actually known for popping out of 5th with many recieving a fresh transmission under warranty. My parents went through two rebuilds of theirs until they demanded a new transmission. The local guys mentioned that they used to rebuild them but since just demanded fresh ones from stock.

Found one that has only done 31k, it had rolled and was a write off. It gets fitted Monday and hopefully I can pick it up Tuesday.

Hi Sandgroper, was the casing of the box worn away, hence the oil drop? Mate of mine had a similar problem with an NK. Apparently part of the gear box was running against the inside of the case, damaging the case and requiring a complete replacement. Mind you it had been making noise for a while!!

Hi Linou, 5th gear just let go and smashed a hole in the bottom of the gearbox about the size of the palm of my hand. When it jumped out of 5th with my wife driving I think that was it falling off the shaft, when she later went to drive out the driveway I think it got hit by another gear in the box then smashed a hole through the bottom of the gearbox dumping the oil.

Hi, Noticed there is a gearbox on e bay at the moment. Buy it now for $2000. It's in Queensland but maybe cheaper than a new one.

Thanks Kev but I've already bought one, $2200 here in Perth so I don't feel too ripped off.

That price is about right Sandgroper. Glad you were able to find one quickly. Make sure you check it for any funny noises and check all the 4WD modes while it is still under wreckers warranty. The transfer chain in my "30,000" km one from a wrecker was a lot noiser than expected.

While I have heard (and seen) these jumping out of 5th, and have experienced them wearing the splines off the output shaft, I have never heard of one going "bang". They are a fairly large and seemingly tough box, rumoured to be out of one of the smaller Canter trucks. The transfer cases on the other hand - best not to get me started on my experiences with those.

Pat, this one did'nt come with the transfer case so I'll just use mine which has been fine so far. This was the ONLY manual DiD gearbox I could find in Perth, I was getting worried hearing time after time " hens teeth, never had one of those before " etc.
I was very relieved to find one at all. It comes with a 3 month-5000km warranty.

Well, it's the first one I have ever hear of actually blowing 5th. Have heard of four wearing off the splines (including mine) and have heard of three transfer problems plus my two, and that's about it.

My NM DiD (May 2002) has just begun popped out of 1st gear - no leaks or other dramas. First happened to my wife, and I had similar thoughts "didn't have it in gear properly" but now it is happened 3 or 4 times to me. The first few seemed innocous... more slipped out quietly. But the last time was more violent - enough to make me get out and look underneath.
I spoke to my mechanic on the phone. He said it was a big job to just go on a fishing expedition at this stage. Its not every time, and only when it is cold.
Just clicked over 100,000. Any clues out there??

                          cheers

gbrought, sounds like the dog teeth are worn. Thats the squared off teeth that is on the side of the individual gears allowing them to lock onto the gear next to it. If it is it will only get worse and eventually not stay in at all.
I had labour quotes from $550 to $800 to take out my box and put in one that I supplied. If mine did'nt have a smashed case I was quoted 15 hours to strip and clean and re-assemble (recondition) my box plus the cost of any parts that need replacing, thats on top of the $550 to $800. So thats about $2000 all up, if you don't have a damaged gearbox case like mine.
Hopefully for you it's something simple and I'm wrong
Good luck and let us know how it goes,

                              Hi Sandgroper,

mmmm. why do I hope your wrong, but suspect your right?
I guess it is wait and see, if it gets worse, then I'll have no choice.

Anyone want to recommend a gearbox specialist close to Sydney CBD??

                              cheers,

                              Geoff.
