  • Clicking noise.

Hello to all. I have an NP 3.8v6 auto and it has developed a clicking noise on the right hand rear wheel. Does anyone know what this could be? It seems to drive ok still. How hard ans expensive would it be to fix. Thanks gary

Loose wheel nuts, disc pads or caliper loose and rattling, companion shaft popped out of diff, wheel bearing on way out, nail in the tyre? Give us a few more details when and what speed etc?

Ok when you are stationary in drive and take off as normal it click click click and then it stops you don't hear it again until you stop again and take off again, it also does it in reverse, clicks 3 or 4 times and then stops, I have driven the car up to 100kph and you can't hear it. Only when you stop and take off again.

Did you do anything before the noise started? Like change tyres, brakes, etc. or Did you do a creek crossing when brakes were hot? Sounds like Loose Disc Pad? Are the brake pulsing at all? I had a noise like this but it turned out to be a Stone in my New Tyre! LOL.

              Could be dry splines.

No I haven't done any 4wd lately. I towed my caravan October long week end. Other than that normal daily driving.

OK, towing the van? Brakes were under a little more pressure, Loose rear pad or maybe Handbrake component loose or spring or clip fell off inside the rear disc? Check it out?

                    Might be the ABS clicking?

Yes, Check that also, remember the choke the front wheels both sides so you can release handbrake and put it neutral to spin the rear wheels to find the noise, use jack stands for safety also.

probably dry splines on the axle. Mine does the same thing and I need to pop the axle out and get some grease on them. They tell me its a common noise but not an indication of major part failure. The axle splines are not fully sealed and can lose their grease after a time.

Its a bit of a worry when you hear the noise but its a simple fix.

Is that the Axle that tends to Pop out on their own accord? Pulling them out and putting grease onto them sounds like asking for trouble? Wouldn't they be more likely to Pop out again?

No it's not the companion shafts. It's the splines that go into rear hub, so outer cv shaft spline. Grease them and clicking gone.
