  • Winch for factory fitted bullbar?

    Hi all,

I bought a 2003 Exceed and it already had a bullbar. It had the Mitsubishi logo on the front, so I believe it is factory fitted.

I would like to know if I can install winch on factory fitted bullbar? Is it strong enough to handle the winch? If yes, any winch to recommend?

Another question is, can a stock Paj without any mod (no lift, no winch, no snorkel) goes through the Crooked River track?

    Thank you.

There is a member Paj People (Sally). They have had a winch put on an alloy bullbar like yours

J have a winch inside stock plastic bumper. Bullbar I have had was just a blink toy. See.

        This is quite possible,
The method both Sally and I used was to make up a winch tray that is mounted between the bull bar and the mounting brackets.
Bit of a task, I made my own, Sally had someone make hers up.

          Hi,

Thanks for the reply. So is it recommended to actually change a bullbar to something that can handle the winch?

Jimbo2, I read on other post about the airbag. Will the tray you made affect the activation of airbag?

          Thanks.

            Gday.
Gus has this mod as well. Not sure if he did it himself or had someone do it for him. Haveca look for his modification thread and it maybe in there.
            Cheers,
            Andrew.

              Hi there,

Thanks to Jim's info and kind help, we also have added an electric winch in a standard Mitsubishi alloy bullbar.

We had an engineer make the cradle up and fit it.

It does not affect the airbag deployment in any way, as it is behind the bar. He has also confirmed this.

The actual winch cradle attaches to the chassis, not the bar, as is the case with all winches.

We went for the Runva XP 11,000lb, with rope. The control box is also behind the light/grille out of the way. Price of $649 with Dyneema, remote and lifetime warranty clinched it for us.

              Cheers,
              Sally

My understanding is air bags deploy when the deacceleration of the car reaches a critical point. The winch is forward of the air bag sensors, and also not effecting the crumple zones as it's forward of these too. When you hit a solid object first thing in is the bull bar, followed by the winch. After these have stopped the car starts to crumple, and its likely this would be when the airbads are designed to deploy.
I thought about this a lot before going ahead, and are comfortable this will not effect deployment. If you are the least bit unsure then perhaps a chat with an automotive engineer would be appropiate.

I've been doing as much reading as I can on this subject as I have a similar project in mind.
The ADR and airbag compliance rules are fairly straight forward so far as I can tell but I certainly would never try to dissuade anyone from talking to an Engineer.

You can read the check list the QLD Dept of Transport (now using most of NCOP, I can only speak for QLD as thats where I am) issues that the Engineer will go through to ensure you have covered off everything that is required. There is no secrets to this really.

My personal project is to make use of the Tigerz11 style $300 bullbar.

                    Hi guys,

Thanks for all the info. I am very new to car modification, so maybe asking some stupid questions, please bear with me.

Who are the Engineer that I can talk to? Are they someone from the Department of Transport, from the MM or from private workshop?

Also, how much will it cost to make and fit the cradle?

                    Thank you.

                          Hi,

We got our engineer via Opposite Lock.

4x4 places normally have a list of approved engineers or engineers specialising in vehicle modifications.

In QLD, our winch didn't require anything from QLD Transport or for our insurer, Suncorp, as nothing protrudes past the original bar.

                          Cheers,
                          Sally
