A few issues with a Ford Ranger..I didn't know who to feel sorry for the most.

    Here is a funny twist to this thread not many Rolls Royce lovers will like to admit.

    Early early days of WW2, before the RR made Merlin motor that powered the Spitfires, Hurricanes, and Lancaster bomber and perhaps numerous other planers.

    RR would cast a block and a set of pistons, than have Johny sit there manually fitting pistons to see how they matched. You can imagine the pile of pistons put aside to fit the next hole.

    Ford, yes FORD pulled RR aside and said you are never going to get anywhere doing that, come over to the US and see how we do it. Thankfully RR did. They were on the bones of their arse and if they didn't get this plane motor deal it was lights out. And arguably perhaps a different outcome form many of us. The rest is history.

    Somewhere in there RR now power the worlds jets, and Ford make things like the Ranger lol.
    Not quite how it happened Jaffles. Old Henry Ford refused to make the Merlin as he had German factories making trucks for the Werhmacht (not that he could have stopped that) and he was a long time isolationist with an open prewar liking for what was happening in Germany and he wasn't too keen on getting involved with the English. But in 1940 the US govt asked Henry to build a bomber plant to make 1200 B24 Liberator bombers. It was built on land owned by Henry and the Government contributed $200M, so Henry expected to do alright.
    By the time I was born in Sept 1944, Henry had made 6000 B24's and was making 1 per hour, so he more than kept his end of the bargain and made a major contribution to the US war effort.
    He was a very cantankerous fellow and there is an amusing story here about the Willow Run plant.

    Back to the Merlin, Packard was selected for the job. The tolerances myths are dubious, but don't forget the US was organised to make US threads, using US standards for materials and I think had more precise mass production machinery, so piston size grades etc might be all different, which required redrafting. However Packard still managed to produce their first Merlins 11 months after the $130M order and went on to power the P51 Mustang, for long range daylight bomber escort over Germany.

      Fair enough, I only have a generalised story from my RR crazy father in law. According to google however RR made Merlin 1933, Packard agreed to build Merlin motors 1940 for P51s.

      But happy to with whatever.

      The Poms like to think they won the war, so do the yanks. Perhaps Germany lost it, and it may be all different if Japan did't attack Pearl Harbour. Just glad those times have passed for now. Hopefully forever.

          Interesting reading! Also have to applaud the poms who decided to up the power of the Mustang mk1, with the eventual result being the long range fighter escorts of the Americans. I believe it was Goering who knew the end was coming for Germany when he saw the P51 fighter escorts over Berlin.

          Never hear the Russians claim victory for the war, but things would have been very different without that front sucking the German resources.

          Anyway, Ford sucks.....

            haha the way I read that is I had most the detail correct in its historical vagueness, bit of a holden V ford debate really. Well actually Ford/Packard/US V Rolls Royce/UK. Either way think the nitty gritty is for the ones who are trying to win the argument, the rest of us don't care. We are free, and all companies have done OK.

            We have Merlin 25 and Griffon 89 in the family. They are a lump of a donk that demands wonder and respect even as a static display. Be a find day we crank those bad boys up. I'd love to see 30-40 of them in the air at once.

              Would love to see some photos of the Merlin and Griffon if you ever have the opportunity.

              Was really interesting reading about the differences in manufacturing and how it led to the stories about tolerances. I never even considered a manufacturer would do it the way RR did.

              Quirky story. Was in a wrecker years ago to grab something. There was an engine valve on the counter sitting there on display. "Bloody hell, that thing is massive. What's it off?" I said to the bloke. Funny story he replied. Been there for years and no one ever knew where it can't from our what it was off. One day a guy came in with his elderly English father. The dad recognised it straight away, picked it up and twirled it around checking it over, looking at numbers possibly but can't recall if there were any on it. He worked for Rolls Royce during the war building engines when he was still quite young, and identified it as from a Merlin
